It was an honor to document the programming, exhibition and first cohort of the Fresh Kills Park Field R/D project. The transforming Fresh Kills Landfill parkspace brought together exciting interdisciplinary artists with a collective passion for ecology and environmental justice. Through a portrait series in each artist’s workspace I was able to get to know their process and glimpse their research and ephemera surrounding their practice. For one artist, their workspace was their living room in Brooklyn, for another it was outside near the entrance to the Staten Island Ferry terminal, for another it was a demolition waste recycling space in Philadelphia. In addition to the workspace series, I candidly photographed multiple events and meetings, capturing the cohort and curators giving presentations, touring public works facilities and in conversations with each other throughout the year. The residency created warm welcoming spaces with good food for the artists to connect on shared pursuits.
